It’s time to find a mate, sign up and be in the running to be crowned FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year!

Entries are now open for the prestigious secondary school contest for students in year nine to year 13 to enter in pairs.

The competition involves practical and theoretical modules, designed for everyone – you don’t even have to be off a farm to take part!

Modules could include: animal anatomy, fencing, meat cut I.D, gun safety, equine, agronomy, feed budgeting, chainsaw assembly and the list goes on.

The competition runs alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest at both regional final and grand final level.

It aims to introduce teenagers to the agriculture, food and fibre sector – from farming and growing, to fishing and horticulture and everything else in between.

Painting a positive picture of the sector from an early age also excites teenagers about the immense amount of opportunities available.

At regional finals, the top five teams from the module section move onto the final, called the 'Face Off’.

Here the competitors have to be quick and put their knowledge to the test with a ‘buzzer’ quiz, similar to the FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

The points are added up in much anticipation, with the top two teams from each region then invited to the grand final in Christchurch, in July.

New Zealand Young Farmers Chief Executive Lynda Coppersmith says it’s a great opportunity for teenagers to test their knowledge, skills and team work.

“It’s all about getting involved and trying something you haven’t given a go before,” she says.

“With regional finals beginning in February, it also gives kids an excuse to train for an event over the summer holidays, and hopefully keep them busy.”

She says it gives the opportunity for those who compete to build character, develop leadership skills and pursue excellence by being pushed outside of their comfort zone.

Entries often fill up fast, so we encourage everyone to sign up ASAP.
