FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final moving to online platforms this year

For the first time in the history of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, the Grand Final will be available on multiple online platforms in a move away from screening on television.

Since the early 1980s, the Contest has been screened on television, but this year organisers wanted to embrace the growing online audience and move most of the content online.

All aspects of the Grand Final will be available on the NZ Young Farmers You Tube channel and the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Facebook page and there would be livestreaming of several key events.

Auckland television production company, JX Live, will work in conjunction with organisers to deliver high quality premium content but there would still be a television screening of the final through pay channel Country TV in an exclusive broadcast partnership deal.

Contest chairperson Dean Rabbidge said the move away from television meant a growing freedom in what content could be shown, and would provide endless possibilities for the future of the Contest.

“We see this as an incredibly positive move as the Contest looks to develop further and believe we will be able to showcase more than ever exactly how prestigious the Contest is in terms of rural New Zealand.”

Mr Rabbidge said television platforms of the past often meant the Contest message around excellence was diluted and human stories centred around drive, determination and courage were lost in translation.

“Now we can tell those stories and we can show the pain, commitment and courage our Grand Finalists display – all while showcasing our primary industry.”

NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said the shift to online platforms for screening the Contest was in line with the innovation today’s Young Farmers display on a daily basis.

“The move online is very much about showcasing our industries, and the fantastic leaders in them, to a growing audience. It is a positive step forward and one in which we believe will deliver great rewards for both New Zealand agriculture and the Contest itself.”
