Quick-witted comedian Te Radar will be in Christchurch next month to make a group of competitive young farmers sweat.

The TV star is hosting the Tasman Regional Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year at Innovation Park in Templeton on April 7th.

Eight finalists will tackle a series of gruelling modules testing their technical and physical abilities.

“Competitors will face off in two adrenaline-pumping head-to-head practical challenges at 10.30am and 1pm,” said contest manager Bridget Johnson.

“Entry to events during the day is free, so it’s a great opportunity to see some of the region’s best young farmers in action.”

A prize pool of $21,000 is up for grabs.

The event culminates in a fast-paced agri-knowledge quiz and evening show hosted by Te Radar at Innovation Park Hall.

The line-up of competitors includes partners Vanessa Robinson and Martin Bates, who contract milk 360 cows near Burnham.

"It’s possible she might beat me, but I don’t want that to happen,” laughed Martin, who’s a qualified builder.

“My strengths are the opposite of Martin’s. He’s more practical than I am,” said Vanessa.

They’ll go up against Megan Hands, Andrew Wiffen, Roscoe Taggart, Stewart Watson, Simon Ferguson and Jono Satterwaite.

The winner will secure a spot in the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Invercargill in July.

“At grand final, you have a one-in-seven chance of taking out the title. That pressure can make or break people,” said Te Radar.

The Tasman regional finals for TeenAg and AgriKidsNZ will also take place in Templeton on April 7th.

More than 35 teams of students have already registered for the two events.

“The aim of the contests is to get kids excited about a career in the primary industries,” said competition co-ordinator David Highsted.

“Students tackle fun challenges which test their practical and theoretical skills.”

It’s the 50th anniversary of the iconic agricultural competition which was first held in 1969.
