Well known event commentator Craig 'Wiggy' Wiggins is leaving the FMG Young Farmer of the Year following six years of service to NZ Young Farmers.

Wiggy has been the colourful and always charismatic compere behind New Zealand's most prestigious agricultural contest and is a much loved icon in the heartland.

Always professional, Wiggy has the ability to bring smiles not only to spectators but to contestants as well and will be missed by the FMG Young Farmer of the Year family.

NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said Wiggy had added another dimension to the Contest when it needed it most.

"He came in at time of progression and very much became part of the fabric that makes up this wonderful Contest. He will be missed and we wish him all the best as he continues his busy schedule commentating at rodeo, sporting and agricultural events.

The Contest is wanting to take a new direction, with a new look and feel and utilise the opportunity to develop talent from within the amazingly diverse and capable membership."

Mr Copeland said the search for a replacement compere for the 2017 season of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year would now be undertaken and would be announced prior to the end of the year.

"So although we are farewelling one icon, I'm confident we'll be announcing a new icon for the 2017 season of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year. It's an exciting time for the Contest and we believe this year will be one of the best finals yet."

Contest chairman Dean Rabbidge said Craig had contributed a lot during his duration as the compere and was always passionate about the contest and NZ Young Farmers as an organisation.

"He was always prepared to go that extra mile to ensure the success of the Contest."

Mr Rabbidge said Craig's contribution would be missed and he wished him well in further endeavours.
