Press Releases » Husband and Wife to be tested in Kaikohe
The Northern Regional Final of ANZ Young Farmer Contest will see husband and wife Rachel and Robert Cashmore of Papakura, battle it out in Kaikohe, Saturday 15 March.
The couple, along with six other competitors, will be vying for a place at the Grand Final and their share of $14,000 in prizes from ANZ, Lincoln University, Silver Fern Farms, AGMARDT, Ravensdown, Honda, Husqvarna and Vodafone.
The events begin with the practical day at the Kaikohe Showgrounds which will test competitors’ skills, strength and stamina. There will be a variety of hands-on, physical and theoretical challenges – all with an agricultural and farming focus.
The day’s events will be followed by the entertaining evening show and quiz round at the Kaikohe Memorial Hall where a cool head and quick wits are vital. Tickets for the evening show can be purchased through local ANZ branches or www.eventfinder.co.nz.
It is set to be tight race for this round of eliminations. The ambitious participants all have strong backgrounds in the primary industry and plenty of experience to call upon.
Mr Cashmore, 29, hails from the Franklin Club and is the fifth generation on his family’s sheep and beef farm which he manages. This will be his first Regional Final and Mr Cashmore says he is motivated by the challenge the competition offers and is keen to see how he ranks against his peers. His biggest rival just might be his other half.
Mrs Cashmore, 30, of the Auckland City Club has competed at the district level five times and made it through to the 2013 Northern Regional Final. She holds a Bachelor of Science and works as a Vet F.A.P Brand Manager with Bayer NZ in the Animal Health Division. She believes agriculture is the heart of New Zealand and financially, is what drives the economy.
Another member of the Auckland City Club is David Kidd. The thirty year old is a farm manager on a 550Ha sheep & beef farm at Shelley Beach. His goals include expanding his investments in the rural sector and making it through to the Grand Final. This will be Mr Kidd’s second Regional Final.
The Northern 2013 Grand Finalist Ian Douglas, Whangarei Club, is in the running once again. The thirty year old oversees a multi-farm fairy operation just outside of Whangarei. He is passionate about food, wine and travel and is working towards building his business to milk 2,500 cow and one day owning a small luxury hotel.
This will be Charlotte Barr’s fourth Regional Final. The twenty-seven year old of the Whangarei Club keeps very busy with work as a relief milker, Tupperware demonstrator, tutor and volunteer ambulance driver. She finds the competition can be a bit nerve wracking but plenty of fun.
Douglas McGregor from the Bay of Islands Club is a first time Regional Finalist. Mr McGregor, 29, works for Landcorp at Takou Bay dairy unit in Kerikeri. He enjoys working in the primary sector because of the lifestyle it offers; working outside, constantly learning and the variety. He also plays in the Manawatu Scottish pipe band which placed 9th at the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland last year.
Another first time Regional Finalist is Angus Thomas, 28, of the Franklin Club. Mr Thomas holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and works as a field consultant for a fertilizer manufacturer in Waiuku.
And lastly is, Andrew Booth, 26 of the Whangarei Club. Mr Booth is a lower order sharemilker in Titoki working towards his goal of farm ownership. He has Diplomas in Agriculture and Farm Management from Lincoln and says he motivated for the contest by the challenge and opportunity to learn. This will be his first Regional Final.
